I am unashamed to admit that I love adornment in my books, and far from distracting me from the story, I think it adds a great deal to many volumes. I want to show some examples of simple adornment that I thoroughly enjoyed, but let me begin with this absolutely gorgeous leaf from a breviary from Renaissance Italy. The artist was Francesco di Antonio del Chierco (1433-1484). This beautiful work is presently preserved at The Walter’s Art Museum in Baltimore.
