Review: Nicholas Nickleby

Nicholas NicklebyNicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Simon Vance narrated the 2007 Blackstone Audio-published audiobook with exceptional skill, and I would strongly recommend this version for those who prefer listening. This is a long book (31 hours plus), and there are so many characters, but I was never confused about who was speaking. His inflections, pacing, and accents were nothing short of spectacular. My favorite character voice? John Browdie.

I can imagine Dickens chuckling to himself as he decided on the character names, and the humor comes through all these years later. It’s one of many delightful reasons to read these classics of Victorian literature. And yes, I shed tears at least twice during the listen, so the emotion still hits home.
