Review: The Red Winter

The Red WinterThe Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An historical fantasy/monster story, with chunks from Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, and Beowulf and a little Dr. Hyde thrown in. Characters include a morally complex immortal MC and a fascinating group of peasants, aristocrats, demons, and angels.

It’s a queer love story with adult themes and references, foul language, lots of gory violence, and more than a few slurs on Christianity. The narrative is beautiful, picturesque, and amusing, and refers to a lofty amount of mythology and folklore. This is author Cameron Sullivan’s debut work.

Rory Barnett narrates the majority of the audiobook as Sebastian and his “guest” Sarmodel, and Imogen Church goes over the top as his lusty succubus housekeeper. Both were amazing, and I highly recommend this format.
