Art I Love: Repin’s Reply of the Cossacks

Repin_-_Reply_of_the_Zaporozhian_Cossacks_Yorck

Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire (1891) by Russian realism artist Ilya Repin is actually my husband’s favorite painting, although I like it, too. It depicts the Cossacks supposedly drafting a vulgar reply to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1676, who demanded their allegiance, even though they’d won the recent battle. The Cossacks are having a lot of fun thinking up the best insults, and the expressions on their faces are priceless. You can read more about this painting and the legend on Wikipedia.

This beautiful work is titled “Australian Gum Trees, Bathurst” and was painted by Australian landscape artist Graham Gercken. It ties in with the audiobook I just finished called “Thornwood House” (reviewed below).

Lady with a Lute painting

Art I Love

This beautiful painting has been a favorite of mine for many years. Its title is “Lady with a Lute” and it was created by American tonalist Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938). I first saw this lovely piece at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in the early 1980s, and immediately bought a print and had it framed. Although the print cannot convey the charm of the original, I can be reminded each time I glance at it.

“As Evening Falls” by Anders Andersen-Lundby

So evocative of winter’s cold and early darkness, I love this painting for the atmosphere. The slush on the road, the coating of wet snow on the trees, and clomp of the horse’s hooves with the trickle of water in the stream.
